Termites

Termites infest more than 5 million United States homes each year, causing more than $5 billion in home damages—more damage than earthquakes, tornadoes and fires combined. The Washington, D.C. metropolitan area is heavily infested with termites, according to the U.S. Department of Forestry.

Termites work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week devouring cellulous material found in wood, paper, drywall, and other materials in your home to provide for their colonies. And once termites find a good spot, they share their location with other termites using a sophisticated pheromone communication system.

Because of the dynamic nature of termites, there are many treatments and termiticides available for homes. However, the proper treatment and termiticide depends on the home construction and severity of the infestation. Even with the correct treatment, it is important that the proper and approved method is practiced to achieve protection. If the technician does not dig the appropriately sized trench and drill the appropriately spaced holes through the concrete, you will not get proper protection.

Think You Have Termites?
Signs of termites include:

  • Visible signs of wood damage
  • Identification of live or dead termites, nests, mounds, and mud tubes

Termites and wood damage would be expected mainly on the ground and/or basement and other subterranean levels of a building. If you are on a higher level, it may be possible that what you are seeing is not a termite-related issue after all.

If you suspect that you might have termites or are at risk for termites, we can arrange for one of our certified specialists to inspect your premises. Contact APS today to schedule a termite inspection!
